The oriental medallion is rendered soft rather than sharp, more the memory of a pattern than a hard outline. Ivory ground, sage tracery, nothing loud enough to fight the furniture standing on it.

• Finding the right size

There, the front legs of the sofa and any chairs should land on the rug rather than floating just off the edge. • Use a rug pad

The jute backing grips reasonably well on its own, but a thin pad still buys extra years before it wears through.

• New pile, a little shedding

  Expect a small amount of loose fiber to shed in the first weeks as a new rug settles in, more than a flatweave sheds but far less than a wool pile. It also ships rolled, so a curled edge and a crease or two are normal at first. Lay it flat and weight the corners for a few days and it relaxes on its own.

• Vacuum and blot spills

  Vacuum regularly on a normal setting, since the pile is dense enough to handle a beater bar without much fiber pulling loose. Blot a spill right away with a clean cloth rather than rubbing it in. Have it professionally cleaned every so often to clear out the dirt that settles deep in a plush pile over years of daily use.
