• The rocking arc

  These rock through roughly 30 degrees rather than a long lazy sweep, and that is deliberate: each runner carries a limiter so the chair stops well before it tips back. The undersides of the runners are faced with quiet strips instead of bare metal, so they slide without grinding and without chewing up a wood deck or a tiled patio.

• Steel frame, wood grain finish

  Under the cushion is a welded steel basket on a steel base, primed with an electrocoat and then powder coated, which is the pair of coatings that keeps rust out of the joints where rain sits longest. The warm curved runners look like timber and are not. That wood grain is heat transferred onto metal, so there is no oiling, sanding or resealing at the start of a season.

• The cushions

  Each chair comes with its own tufted cushion, 6.25 inches thick, filled and faced in polyester. The source rates both the fill and the cover water resistant and UV resistant, so an afternoon of hard sun will not fade them out in a summer. Water resistant is not waterproof though, and a cushion left out through a storm will hold that water for a day.

• Sitting in one

  This is a sink-in chair, not a perch. The cushion runs up the back and rolls over the rim into a soft low arm on each side, and the shell beneath it is a curved wire basket rather than a flat panel, so the seat gives a little as you settle. One person can sprawl in it. Two adults sharing one is not the idea.

• Weight capacity

  Each chair supports 330 pounds. That figure is per chair rather than for the pair, and it covers an adult dropping into the seat rather than easing down onto it. The load runs into a welded steel base with a crossbar tying the two runners together, which is what holds the number on a chair this wide.

• Assembly at home

  Both chairs need assembling and neither one is difficult: the legs and the two runners bolt onto the shell with the hardware in the box, then the cushion drops in last. You can see the screw head at the runner joint in the close photographs. Work on a flat surface, start every fastener by hand, and tighten them once the frame sits square.

• Care and the off season

  Spot clean the cushions rather than putting them through a machine. The covers are not listed as removable, though the whole cushion lifts straight off the chair. Wipe the frames with mild soap and a damp cloth. When the weather turns, store the chairs inside or throw a cover over them, which is what keeps the coating and the fabric going season after season.

• What ships

  Two chairs, two cushions and the assembly hardware are included. A side table, a footstool and a storage cover are not included, and anything else you see in the photographs is styling. Each chair comes with its own cushion, cut to fit that shell. The set carries a one year limited warranty, and dark gray on black is the only way it ships.
