  The face is machine woven from polypropylene, which is what lets the cloudy blue and grey bloom into soft edges rather than a hard-edged graphic. Pile height is 0.38 inches on the woven face, not the jute backing underneath, so it sits low and dense rather than plush.

• Finding the right size

  This weave comes in a range of sizes, from a runner for a hallway to a large rectangle sized for a living room. There, the front legs of the sofa and any chairs should land on the rug rather than floating just off the edge. At a dining table, leave enough rug beyond each chair so it stays underfoot when someone pushes back to stand.

• Use a rug pad

  A rug pad is recommended and not included. It stops the rug creeping on a hard floor, keeps the corners from curling up into a trip hazard, and adds a layer of cushion the low pile does not have on its own. The jute backing grips reasonably well already, but a thin pad still helps it stay put.

• Minimal shedding, ships rolled

  Machine woven from synthetic fiber rather than a natural pile, this rug does not shed the way a wool rug does, so there is no long shedding period to vacuum through. It does ship rolled, so expect a curled edge and a crease or two at first. Unroll it, weight the corners, and it lies flat within a few days.

• Vacuum and blot spills

  Vacuum regularly to lift grit before it works down into the pile. Blot a spill right away with a clean cloth rather than rubbing it in, since the polypropylene fiber does not absorb the way wool does and gives a spill time to sit on the surface. That same resistance is what keeps the color from fading under regular vacuuming.

• What ships

  The rug arrives rolled in a single carton rather than folded flat. A rug pad is not included, and the furniture and decor shown in the photos are styling only, not included either. Check the size against your room before it arrives, since a rug this size is heavy and awkward to send back.

• Colour looks different at home

  Screens shift colour, so the blue and grey here can look softer in daylight and cooler under warm lamplight. The ivory ground does the opposite, warming under incandescent light. Look at it against your own floor and light for a day before deciding it is right for the room.
