  The surface is power loomed from polypropylene rather than hand knotted, which keeps the medallion pattern sharp edge to edge instead of soft and irregular.   A rug pad is recommended under Blackdown, especially on a hard floor where the rug has nothing else gripping it in place.   Polypropylene does not shed loose fiber the way a wool pile does, so there is no weeks-long fluff period after it arrives. It does ship rolled, and a rolled rug wants a day or two flat before the edges relax completely. Unroll it in the room, weight the corners, and let it settle.
