• A dense, tousled shag

  The pile is thick and twisted rather than combed straight, so it catches shadow and light differently across the surface instead of lying flat. There is no border or pattern here, just dense yarn laid edge to edge for a heavy, plush texture underfoot.

• Material and pile

  The face is polypropylene, machine woven rather than hand-knotted, into a true shag 1.5 inches deep. The backing is polypropylene too, the same fiber as the pile, so being loomed rather than knotted is what keeps a solid rug this size affordable.

• Choosing your size

  It comes in two sizes. The 9 by 12 foot fits a standard living room seating area with a sofa's front feet resting on the rug. The 10 by 13 foot 1 inch size reaches near wall to wall in a larger room without crowding the furniture. In an entryway or office, run the shorter edge to the wall instead of centering it.

• Use a rug pad

  The backing here is polypropylene, not a naturally grippy fiber like jute, so a pad is recommended and not included. It keeps the rug from creeping on a hard floor and adds a layer of cushion underneath a pile that is already thick on its own.

  A shag this dense can shed a few loose fiber ends in the first weeks as the pile breaks in; that settles down with regular care and is normal for a rug this deep. Being polypropylene rather than wool, it will not keep shedding well past that early period.
