Bremhaus Whiteadder Area Rug

A tonal stripe in cream, machine woven with a low half-inch pile so it settles flat under furniture and reads as texture rather than pattern from across the room.

The stripe comes from the weave itself, not a printed motif, so it catches light differently depending on which way you vacuum. The face is a polypropylene blend on a jute backing, rated safe over floor heating and resistant to everyday spills.

• A woven stripe, not printed

  The stripe comes from the weave itself, alternating ivory and pale sand yarns rather than a printed motif, so it catches the light differently depending on which way you vacuum. Cream throughout, it reads as texture more than pattern and stays quiet next to a busier room.

• Woven face, jute backing

  The face is a polypropylene blend, machine woven for an even, durable stripe. The number on the specs is pile height, the woven pile itself, measured at 0.5 inches; the backing adds a little more, so leave some margin if you're checking clearance under a door. The backing underneath is jute, a natural fiber.

• Runner to a great room

  This weave comes in fourteen sizes, from a 2 foot 2 inch by 22 foot runner up through a 12 by 18 foot rectangle, plus round and square cuts from 8 feet to 12 feet. Pick the round or square if the table is round; for a rectangle, leave room for a chair to pull out and stay on the rug.

• A pad still helps here

  The jute backing has some natural grip of its own, more than a plain woven back, but it isn't a slip coating like latex. A thin rug pad is still worth adding on a hard floor, mainly to stop the corners from curling and to cushion the pile underfoot. This weave is also rated safe for use over floor heating.

• Machine woven sheds very little

  Because this is machine woven from a synthetic fiber rather than hand tufted or hand knotted, it does not shed the way a wool weave does; expect only light fluff in the first few vacuum passes. A rug fresh out of the box can hold a slight curl near the edges; that relaxes flat within a week or two of regular foot traffic and the weight of furniture.

• At home in every room

  The gallery shows this weave doing duty in a living room in front of a sofa and coffee table, at the foot of a bedroom bed, centered under a round dining table with four chairs pulled up to it, anchoring an entryway console, and under an office desk and chair. It holds up to that kind of daily traffic without matting down in the well worn paths.

• Vacuum first, spot clean spills

  Polypropylene doesn't absorb the way a natural fiber does, so a spill tends to sit on the surface long enough to blot up before it soaks in. Regular care is a vacuum pass, with or without the beater bar since this is a machine woven pile rather than a delicate hand knot. For anything beyond dust, spot clean with a damp cloth and let it air dry.

• The rug arrives, pad does not

  What arrives is the weave itself, rolled and boxed at the size ordered. A rug pad is not included, so if you decide the jute backing needs the extra grip, order a pad separately in the same footprint. Let the rug lie flat for a day before pushing furniture back against the edges.
