Grevane Stronsay Wingback Storage Bed

The spare room stops being storage the moment the bed takes over the job. Lift the platform, slide the winter quilts and the extra pillows underneath, and the closet goes back to being a closet. What is left is a made bed with a tall wingback headboard, waiting on whoever is staying over.

Frame and slat kit are both manufactured wood, braced by center support legs (one on Queen, two on King) and finished on the back so the bed can sit away from the wall. It carries 1,000 lb. and needs no box spring. Assembly is a two person job.

• Vertical channels, nailhead trim

  Vertical channel tufting runs the full height of the headboard, with a wing at each end and a line of nailhead trim tracing the outside edge of both wings. The foot end stays low, a plain 11.8 inch panel level with the side rails rather than a tall footboard.

• Assembly, no drawers to fit

  Assembly is required, and the tools and hardware needed to bolt the frame, headboard and hydraulic struts together ship in the box. There are no drawer boxes to square up here, since the storage is one lifting deck rather than a chest of individual drawers.

• One deck, hinged at the head

  There are no drawers on this bed. Instead the whole mattress deck lifts on a gas-lift hydraulic mechanism hinged at the head end, rising from the foot to open one single, deep storage compartment underneath. The manufactured wood slats that carry the mattress sit on that same deck and rise with it, so there is no box spring anywhere in the system.

• Queen and King only

  This bed is built in two sizes, Queen and King, both carrying the same channel tufted headboard and the same lift storage underneath. The King runs on two center support legs down the middle for the wider mattress, while the Queen uses one, matched to its narrower deck.

• 57.9 inches when it opens

  Closed, the bed stands 50.4 inches to the top of the headboard. Open, the deck swings up to 57.9 inches off the floor to reach the full storage cavity, the same figure on both sizes, so check what hangs above the bed, a shelf, art or a sloped ceiling, before you plan on lifting it all the way.

• Cream, velvet-like, engineered wood

  The upholstery is a soft, velvet-like fabric in cream over a foam fill, with nailhead trim finishing the wing edges in a contrasting tone. Underneath, the frame and the twelve included slats are both manufactured engineered wood, chosen for a platform sturdy enough to lift.

• 1,000 pounds on the King

  The King, on two center support legs, is rated to 1,000 pounds, covering the mattress, bedding and sleepers together. Queen shares the same frame and slat design on a single center leg, sized to its narrower mattress and the same weight-bearing structure.

• Wipe clean, spot treat

  Wipe the cream upholstery with a dry cloth for everyday dust, going over the channel seams as well as the flat panels. Spot clean any marks with a fabric-safe cleaner, and test it on a hidden patch first since the fabric has a slight sheen that can shift with certain solutions.

• What arrives, and how heavy

  The box includes the headboard, the upholstered rails, the lifting platform with its hydraulic struts, the manufactured wood slats and the hardware to assemble it. The frame itself weighs 108 pounds for Queen or 124 for King before a mattress goes anywhere near it, so plan on two people to carry it in. The mattress is not included.

• Both sizes are 84.6″ from headboard to foot. Check that run of floor before you order.
• Height is 50.4″ in both sizes. Only the width changes, from 65.4″ Queen to 81.1″ King.
• The deck lifts to 57.9″ off the floor. Nothing over the bed can hang lower than that.
